Department Summary

The Institute for Fundamental Science (IFS) enhances the experimental, theoretical, and astronomy research activities at the University of Oregon. IFS is one of several centers and institutes supported by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation and maintains a close relationship with the Department of Physics as well as the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Mathematics.

The IFS experimental high energy physics group consists of physics faculty members James Brau, Laura Jeanty, Stephanie Majewski, David Strom, and Eric Torrence.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced software engineer to develop and implement software for the upgrades to the Trigger and Data Acquisition System on the ATLAS experiment ( The University of Oregon has key roles in the ATLAS Event Filter system, which is a computing farm that will make the final decision on which particle collisions to record in the high-pileup environment of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. Co-processors such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays and general-purpose Graphical Processing Units may be employed to offload specific computational tasks. The Research Engineer position will provide key contributions to the software used in the Trigger and Data Acquisition System used on the ATLAS experiment.

The successful candidate will collaborate with physicists and engineers at the University of Oregon and other institutions in the U.S. and abroad. The position may be based at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, or at CERN, an international particle physics laboratory outside of Geneva, Switzerland.

This position is a 12-month Career Non-Tenure-Track Faculty (CNTTF) position in the Engineer classification series. The position’s responsibilities are guided by the Physics Department's NTTF Professional Responsibilities Policy, United Academics Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the Physics Department's NTTF Policy for Promotion and Review.

The position will be supervised by Stephanie Majewski.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in engineering or related field.
  • Five years of work experience related to the position, or equivalent combination of additional education and experience.


Professional Competencies

  • Working or proficient knowledge in C++ and modern software design principles.
  • Experience/Interest in programming GPUs.
  • Proficient knowledge of scripting languages such as Python.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively to report on project progress.
  • Ability to collaborate with senior engineering and scientific staff to design and develop special-purpose equipment and/or systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate.
