Job Description

Job Summary:

We are looking for a detail-oriented and experienced medical coder to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for accurately assigning Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD diagnoses, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes, as well as handling modifiers and quantities based on medical record documentation (both paper and electronic) for outpatient encounters. You will also play a key role in training and educating staff on coding practices and contributing to coding compliance activities.

Education and Certification:

Required: One or more of the following certifications from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC):
Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT)
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
Certified Coding Specialist - Physician (CCS-P)
Preferred: Relevant experience with the appropriate level of certification.
Experience:

Required: At least three years of experience in an outpatient setting (such as a physician's office or ambulatory surgery center) within the last five years. This includes assigning E&M, CPT, and HCPCS codes across various medical specialties (e.g., Family Practice, Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, OB/GYN). Please note that experience in ancillary specialties (e.g., PT/OT, Radiology, Lab, Nutrition) or in specific settings like home health, skilled nursing facilities, or rehabilitation care is not considered qualifying. Coding experience limited to meeting payer requirements for business office functions is also not qualifying. Two years of outpatient or ambulatory surgery experience in a military medical facility may be considered.
Skills and Qualifications:

Excellent computer and communication skills.
Strong ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines.
Prior coding experience in a military treatment facility (MTF) and familiarity with MHS Genesis are desirable.
Additional Requirements:

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a documented exception is required.
U.S. citizenship and a security clearance must be obtained prior to starting the position.
