Job Classification: Firefighter

Toledo Fire and Rescue is currently hiring for the position of Firefighter. To apply, you must complete the online application and the entry-level exam between August 22, 2024, and November 22, 2024. Additionally, the Firefighter Mile (FFM) must be completed by January 17, 2025. Please note that the City of Toledo requires candidates to complete the FFM during this exam period.

Voucher Information:

Ohio residents and residents of certain Michigan counties (Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee, Monroe, Washtenaw, and Wayne) may be eligible for a voucher to cover the cost of the entry-level exam. Vouchers are limited to the first 300 applicants who can prove residency. Proof of residency may include a valid Ohio driver's license, identification card, or voter registration card. All requests for vouchers are subject to verification by the Department of Human Resources.

Eligible residents who pass the entry-level exam may also receive a voucher for one attempt at the FFM, limited to the first 150 applicants. Candidates must pass the entry-level exam before requesting a voucher for the FFM. If the FFM is not completed by January 17, 2025, the candidate will not be allowed to continue in the hiring process.

Job Requirements:

Age: Must be at least 18 years old and not older than 40 at the final closing date for the Civil Service exam.
Citizenship: Must be eligible to work in the United States.
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Driver's License: Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license.
Vision: Must meet specific vision standards, including 20/20 binocular vision with correction.
Certification: Newly appointed Firefighters must become certified paramedics and maintain certification throughout their career.
Hiring Process:

Background Investigation: Conducted by the Toledo Police Department.
Oral Interview: Scheduled for candidates who pass the background check.
Medical Examination: Candidates with a conditional offer must pass a medical exam.
Physical Ability Examination: Candidates must pass a test designed to evaluate their fitness for the job.
Fire Training Academy: All appointed Firefighters must meet the standards during the probationary period.
Veteran's Preference: Veterans may be eligible for additional points on the recruitment exam. A copy of the DD-214 must be attached to the application.

EMT/Paramedic Preference: Applicants with EMT or paramedic certifications may receive additional points on the recruitment exam.
