About The Position

The Clark County Public Works Department is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Equipment Operator position within the Road and Traffic Divisions. This position operates light and medium construction equipment and performs minor maintenance on such equipment in the performance of skilled field construction, maintenance, and repair activities; may operate heavy equipment on a training or as-needed basis.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

ROAD DIVISION EXAMINATION/SELECTION PROCESS:

Practical Examination - 75% (Passing percentage 70), and Oral Interview -25%

Only candidates with a passing percentage of 70 or above on practical exam, will be placed on the eligibility list. Please note the practical examination consists of 2 components and evolutions must be passed with percentage of 70 or above combined to remain in the examination process.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school AND three (3) years of full-time general construction and maintenance work, including two (2) years of which was in the operation of a variety of construction equipment. Experience in a department CDL position may be substituted on a year for year basis.

Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application. Do not substitute a resume for your application or write "see attached resume" on your application.

Working Conditions: Work extended shifts or be called back in emergency situations. Work out of doors in all weather conditions. Work with exposure to heavy traffic. Work with exposure to potentially hazardous paving materials, solvents, chemicals, etc. May work with exposure to potentially hazardous environments including biological debris and waste.

Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid appropriate Commercial Driver's License at time of application. Nevada Class A Driver’s License required within 90 days of appointment. Specified positions may require possession of a tanker, hazardous materials and/or other appropriate endorsement

Some positions may require a crane operator's certification through the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operator's (NCCCO) within twenty-four (24) months from the date of hire.

Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions.

Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.

Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination and subject to random drug testing in accordance with DOT requirements.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs an operational and safety check of the equipment before use; checks fuel and fluid levels, air pressures, hydraulic systems and lubrication points; performs lubrication of essential parts. Performs minor adjustments and preventive maintenance and reports the need for major maintenance or repair. Operates a wide variety of equipment such as loaders, rollers, backhoes, sand spreaders, tractors and similar equipment to perform road, drainage channel, underground pipeline, sludge bed loading and similar maintenance and repair. Drives varied trucks including dump trucks, patch truck, flush truck and chip sealer to move materials and equipment; operates paint striping equipment for roadway makings. Operates high-pressure jet rodding equipment to clean sewers and storm drains. Operates specialized drilling equipment to set poles and signs; installs guardrails; pours and finishes concrete. Ensures that tools, equipment, safety devices and materials required for the job are loaded prior to moving to the job site. Uses a variety of power equipment as a member of a crew such as air compressors, jackhammers, water pumps, sprayers, asphalt grinders and saw machines. Checks job sites for potential hazards; ensures that appropriate traffic control and warning devices are properly placed and safety equipment is worn. Secures equipment upon completion of the work. Maintains basic logs and records related to work performed; may use a mobile device to lookup or input data related to the work. Uses a variety of hand and power tools related to the work. Responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis as assigned. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team. Serves as a member of a crew and perform heavy physical labor as required. May direct the work of a crew on a project basis; may instruct less experienced workers.

STREET SWEEPER EQUIPMENT OPERATOR:

Operates motorized street sweeping equipment to sweep gutters and streets; remains alert for hazardous conditions or conditions needing correction and reports them to the proper authority. Performs an operational and safety check of the vehicle each morning; checks fuel and fluid levels, air pressures, hydraulic systems and lights and signals. Performs minor adjustments and preventive maintenance and reports the need for major maintenance or repair. Inspects auxiliary for proper operating condition and safety. Adjusts and operates brooms, guards, vacuum, sprayer, conveyors and related equipment. May remove obstacles from street and gutter areas to permit access. Cleans up debris remaining on roadways after floods; responds to emergency situations such as glass or oil spills from automobile accidents. Cleans and washes vehicle after use; disposes of trash in approved areas. Maintains basic logs and records related to work performed; reports problems such as repeated parked vehicles which hinder cleaning process. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team. May be assigned to operate a variety of construction or other equipment or act as a member of a crew on a relief or emergency basis.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Strength and mobility to work in a typical field equipment operation setting, including using and adjusting various types of construction or related equipment; strength to perform sustained physical labor, including standing, walking and climbing; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 90 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone.
