The Obesity Society (TOS), the leading scientific organization for over 30 years dedicated to the study, prevention, and treatment of obesity, is conducting a search for its next Chief Executive Officer (CEO). With obesity rates rising at epidemic proportions and the development of new therapeutic agents, the obesity field is at an important juncture. TOS is seeking a visionary and strategic leader to guide the organization during this critical period of growth in its mission to advance the science-based understanding of obesity and improve the lives of those affected by this complex disease. The CEO will spearhead innovative initiatives and programs that enhance membership engagement, foster member retention and growth, and strengthen advocacy efforts to improve access to obesity care. The CEO will also be expected to lead comprehensive fundraising initiatives to support and expand research and educational programs, along with fostering partnerships with industry and academic institutions to drive impactful solutions. Reporting to the Governing Board, the TOS CEO will lead the growth of a vibrant and impactful organization at the forefront of obesity research, treatment, and advocacy. As the organization experiences significant growth, the CEO will be instrumental in leading the strategic expansion of staff and resources to support TOS's evolving programs and initiatives, ensuring sustainable growth and organizational excellence.

With a staff of dedicated professionals and a multimillion-dollar operating budget, TOS supports a diverse and interdisciplinary membership committed to advancing obesity science and care.
About TOS Members TOS is the leading professional organization for individuals involved in obesity research, treatment, and prevention. Its membership includes researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and educators working collaboratively to reduce the impact of obesity on health and society through position statements, advocacy, and scientific meetings.
About TOS’s Work TOS is dedicated to improving obesity prevention and treatment through:
- Scientific Research: Advancing and disseminating cutting-edge obesity research to inform evidence-based practices. This includes a yearly scientific conference and supporting the leading peer-reviewed scientific journal focused on Obesity.
- Education: Offering accredited educational programs and resources to healthcare professionals and researchers.
- Advocacy: Creating position statements based on the latest research for informing policy improving treatment efficacy and practice, and supporting access to obesity care, and reducing obesity-related health disparities.
- Public Awareness: Raising awareness about obesity as a serious and complex disease.
Structure of TOS TOS is overseen by a Governing Board and supported by numerous committees and task forces addressing various aspects of obesity science and policy. The organization collaborates with international partners, government agencies, and other stakeholders to influence obesity science and health outcomes.
The CEO Role The CEO will provide visionary leadership and operational oversight for TOS. Responsibilities include:
- Strategic Leadership: Developing and executing strategies that advance TOS’s mission and goals.
- Organizational Management: Overseeing day-to-day operations, staff management, and financial performance.
- Board Collaboration: Partnering with the Governing Board to develop and implement strategic initiatives and policies.
- Advocacy and External Relations: Representing TOS in national and international forums, building partnerships with stakeholders, and advocating for obesity research and treatment policies.
- Program Development: Ensuring the delivery of high-quality scientific programs, educational offerings, and public outreach initiatives.
- Financial Stewardship: Managing the organization’s finances, including budgeting, forecasting, and identifying new revenue streams.
Critical Competencies for Success - Visionary Leadership: Ability to set and deliver on a clear vision and inspire stakeholders to advance TOS’s mission.
- Advocacy and Policy Influence: Effectively representing TOS in policy discussions and advancing advocacy goals.
- Financial and Operational Acumen: Strong financial management skills and operational oversight experience with a proven track record of increasing both financial resources and membership in previous organizations.
- Member Engagement: Building strong relationships with members and enhancing the value of TOS membership.
- Communication and Collaboration: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build strategic partnerships with other health organizations and industry.
Candidate Profile Professional Qualifications - Senior leadership experience in healthcare, scientific organizations, and/or non-profit sectors with a strong emphasis on fiscal management and growth.
- Demonstrated expertise in organizational growth, including strategic staff expansion and development.
- Proven experience in strategic planning and execution.
- Financial management expertise, including budgeting, revenue development, and financial sustainability strategies and a proven track record of fundraising and growth.
- Demonstrated success in advocacy and public policy initiatives.
- Experience working with a volunteer-driven organization and governing boards.
- Advanced degree in public health, business, science, or related field preferred.
- Preferred candidate resides in the DC area or can work on site at least two weeks per month.
